PM Orbán: Together, we faced the pandemic with determination and resilience [VIDEO]

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán posted an exclusive documentary about Hungary’s response to COVID-19. Here are the key highlights.

The COVID-19 pandemic presented challenges that required unparalleled unity, swift action, and strategic planning. As a nation, we rose to the occasion, protecting lives and livelihoods through bold decisions and unwavering determination. This was not the time for hesitation—it was the time to act.

The pandemic underscored a threat unseen in generations, demanding urgent action. By December 2019, the first reports from China indicated that something extraordinary was unfolding. Within months, much of Western Europe was overwhelmed, with hundreds losing their lives daily to the virus. Hungary recognized the seriousness of the situation early and chose total preparedness as its strategy.

“We faced an unknown danger, and it was clear we had to prepare for the worst-case scenario. We couldn’t allow even one life to be lost due to a lack of ventilators or other essential resources,” PM Orbán said in the documentary. From securing healthcare supplies to mobilizing an operational team before the virus reached Hungarian soil, every step was taken to ensure the country’s readiness.

This foresight proved critical as the virus began spreading globally. By March 4, Hungary confirmed its first case, and immediate measures were introduced, including lockdowns, mandatory mask wearing, and border controls. Meanwhile, a race for vital equipment ensued worldwide. Hungary, determined not to be left behind, acted decisively to acquire ventilators, protective gear, and later vaccines from every available source. “When the first vaccines became available, we initiated procurements in every direction,” the prime minister said.

Healthcare workers stood as the backbone of the nation’s defense. For two years, they faced unimaginable challenges, working 24/7 to care for COVID-19 patients. Their bravery and dedication embodied the spirit of the nation. "They knew they were risking their health, even their lives, but they never wavered. This was a monumental challenge," PM Orbán reflected.

Vaccination campaigns became the turning point in Hungary’s fight against the pandemic. By 2021, Hungary achieved a leading global position in vaccination rates, with 6.5 million citizens receiving COVID-19 shots. This success was attributed to swift and diversified vaccine procurement, enabling Hungary to protect its people faster than many other nations.

Beyond healthcare, the government implemented robust measures to safeguard the economy, introducing wage subsidies, loan moratoriums, and other programs to protect jobs and businesses. Every effort was made to ensure stability for Hungarian families during this turbulent period.

The COVID-19 pandemic taught us a profound truth: “We, Hungarians, are capable of far more than we think of ourselves and much more than others might believe,” the prime minister said. The crisis proved that Hungary could unite and rise to any challenge.

In this time of adversity, the country demonstrated its commitment to every citizen. “The state must stand by its people in times of need. What did we give to the future? Countless saved lives. For us, every life matters,” PM Orbán recalled.

Hungary’s response to the pandemic serves as a testament to the resilience and solidarity of our people. Whether protecting lives within our borders or supporting Hungarians abroad, the nation proved that unity and determination can overcome even the gravest challenges. The lessons learned and the lives saved remain a legacy for future generations.
