Hungary’s legislative proposal on the Sovereignty Protection Act will soon arrive in front of the National Assembly, implementing multiple measures to combat foreign interference in our domestic political affairs. In short, the law will establish the Sovereignty Protection Office, tasked with protecting Hungary’s sovereignty and investigating foreign influences on electoral processes. What’s more, the proposal seeks to make the acceptance of foreign funds for political purposes (or the attempt to conceal them) punishable by up to three years in prison.
“Why so strict?,” you may ask. Well, shortly after the 2022 election campaign, an investigation conducted by the State Audit Office revealed that prime minister candidate Péter Márki-Zay’s association burned through nearly HUF 1.7 billion of illicit foreign funding. And this past summer, it became public that Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony came under serious scrutiny for more than half a billion forints “miraculously” appearing in donation boxes for his failed election campaign.

These people have no popular mandate whatsoever. What’s this if not direct interference in our domestic affairs?
We’re all too familiar with that tired, groundless argument: Hungary is anti-Semitic because of how it talks about Soros and because of those billboards, the same drill as before. But it's never been about George Soros's identity as a Jew. It’s about his ideology and his radical activism. It’s about his determination to meddle in politics in Hungary and other countries of Europe. He has written about it himself countless times, and that intention didn't go away with the handing over of leadership to his son.
We won't let Hungary be "finished off," we must protect our sovereignty and independence at all costs, and the Sovereignty Protection Act will do exactly that.
