Athletes taking part in the Maccabi European Games in Budapest have unveiled a new commemorative headstone at the grave of the first Jewish Olympic champion, Alfred Hajós.
According to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, the ceremony took place on Wednesday at the Hungarian capital’s Kozma Street Jewish Cemetery.
Hajós, born Arnold Guttman, was a famous swimmer, soccer player and architect who won the swimming competition at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens, the first modern edition of the Olympics. He became the first Jewish and the first Hungarian Olympic champion.
The week-long Maccabi European Games opened on Monday and features delegations from across Europe competing in some 20 categories, including chess.
