Basilica of Esztergom to host new opera about the Battle of Zenta

The Basilica of Esztergom will host a new opera about the Battle of Zenta.

The show titled Zenta, 1697 provides a factual portrayal of this historical event, promoting key patriotic values during its showings from August 14th.

With musical scores composed by Gyula Szarka and dialogues written by Balázs Szálinger, the ambitious piece captures the 1697 battle in poignant detail. Despite the dire conditions, the lack of equipment and the difference in the size of the armies, the Hungarian soldiers came out victorious, having dealt a lethal blow to the Ottoman Empire.

The opera has already been shown in Zenta. The organizers decided to move the production to draw more attention to the monumental acts, including group scenes celebrating the highly-sophisticated military strategy deployed by the Hungarian army.

It only seemed natural that their next choice befell on the palatial, richly-adorned, neoclassical-style building of the Basilica of Esztergom, whose larger, loftier space caters for a much better viewing experience.
