Budapest ticket inspectors have now been equipped with mobile payment (POS) terminals, meaning that fare dodgers lacking enough cash can pay their fine with their bank cards or mobile phones.
According to Rmx.news, the Budapest public transport company (BKK) has been testing the system since May and has so far received 1,800 fine transfers through it.
The public transport network of the Hungarian capital still exclusively uses paper tickets, having made several attempts at introducing some form of electronic payment over the past decade.
A mobile phone-based system is currently being tested on the fast-track bus line to Ferihegy airport and BKK plans to phase in a card-based system through 2021.
