According to Atomstroyexport, a unit of Russian nuclear power company Rosatom, the company has started building new reactors for the Paks 2 project at the site. Hungarian subcontractors have begun ground preparations for the foundations and the housing of the VVER-1200 reactors. The construction phase started after Hungarian and Russian representatives signed on Aug. 18 an amendment to the contract on the construction of the two new nuclear power plant blocks. Around 1 million cubic meters of earth must be excavated and removed in the area of block 6, and this work is scheduled to be completed by the end of the autumn, the company’s statement said. The new construction phase applies to all the main structures, requiring a large increase in staff, machines and equipment, the statement said, adding that around 10,000 workers are involved in the construction.
