Hungarian swimmer Kristof Milak has set a new world record for 200m butterfly.
Milak finished the race, held yesterday as part of the FINA World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea, in 1.50.73.
The 19-year-old completed the first hundred meters in 52.88, the exact same split recorded by Phelps in 2009, finishing the second hundred 0.78 faster than his long-held idol.
Japan’s Daiya Seto came second in 1.53.86, while South-Africa’s Chad Le Clos took third place with 1.54.15.
“I didn’t really expect to break a world record, but I was prepared to do it," Milak said afterwards.
In the past, the young swimmer has won various awards, including a gold and silver medal at the World Championships, as well as the European Championships. He is also a three-time Youth Olympic Champion from the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics.
