The Hungarian water polo team has advanced to the quarter-finals of the FINA World Championships.
Despite playing without their captain, Dénes Varga, who is nursing a broken finger, the Hungarian team secured their place in the quarter-finals of the FINA World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea, after beating Spain 13-11 and finishing first in their group.
“Everybody had to take on a little bit more, taking one step forward in the absence of Dumi (the nickname of team captain Varga). But we have not lost him – he is here with us,” coach Tamás Märcz said after the match.
“We have played the same tactical elements as we did with him, and it paid off,” Märcz said, adding that the key to victory was a strong defense in the first three quarters.
Rmx.news points out that Hungary will now either face Olympic champions Serbia, Montenegro or Greece.
“Regardless of which one it will be, these are all very strong teams. This is, so to say the death branch, but we are ready to fight death itself,” Märcz said.
