Hungarians remembered the victims of Communism up and down the country yesterday.
Hungary’s Parliament passed the law declaring February 25th memorial day for the victims of Communism in 2010.
On February 25th, 1947, Soviet forces arrested Béla Kovács, Secretary-General of the Smallholders' Party for anti-Communist behavior, marking the first step in the process that led to the total dismantling of the multi-party system in Hungary.
The Black Book of Communism puts the global number of victims at around 100 million while in Central and Eastern Europe the victims of famine, concentration camps and political executions is estimated at around one million.
