Hungary qualifies for the European Championships

Hungary narrowly qualified for the European Championships on Thursday night in a 2-1 win against Iceland at Puskás Stadium.

 

The Hungarian National Team defeated Iceland on Thursday night in a nail-biting football win.

Hungary did not start off on the right foot, by the 11th minute Iceland successfully put a shot at the net. The ball slipped past Péter Gulácsi hands to the back of the net. Iceland held this 1-0 lead into the second half of the game.

Loic Nego, a French-born Hungarian, challenged Iceland with a shot on net in the 88th minute. The shot ricocheted off of an Icelandic defender’s leg to land in the net. Four minutes later in added time Hungary had another attempt on goal.

Scoring in the 92nd minute of the game, Dominic Szoboszlai helped to secure Hungary’s spot in the European Championships. Szoboszlai who also plays for Red Bull Salzburg is a 20-year-old midfielder who joined the senior squad in 2019.

Szoboszlai was interviewed after the game, said that he did not think that he was “expected to be the hero, only to help the team [...] Maybe I became the hero, but I could not have done that without the others.”

Szoboszlai gave excitement to Hungarians around the world with his last minute goal to send Hungary to the European Championship Cup.

Marco Rossi, the team’s coach was not able to attend the match as he recently tested positive for coronavirus. Being in quarantine did not stop him from watching the game. He posted on Facebook to congratulate the players, crew, and all.

Thursday night, along with Hungary; Slovakia, Scotland and North Macedonia qualified for the UEFA European Championship.

Hungary’s group of rivals for the Cup are Portugal, the current UEFA champion, France the current FIFA World Cup champion and Germany.

Budapest is set to co-host the event with Slovenia in June 2021. This will be the third major UEFA event to be held in Hungary.
