The Minority SafePack European Citizens’ initiative, which seeks European Union protection for indigenous national minorities in the bloc, is set to secure the one million signatures needed for its approval.
Árpád János Potápi, the state secretary for Hungarian communities abroad, said the initiative was launched by the Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN) in May last year requiring one million signatures from at least seven EU member states by April 3rd for the European Commission to put the scheme on its agenda.
The state secretary said the issue concerns about 60-70 million people across Europe, and Hungary joined the initiative.
He added that the collection of signatures had gained momentum recently, but the target is still to collect more than one million signatures to ensure that the initiative does not fail if there are any errors in the filled out sheets.
