Families with children must have higher living standards than those without, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told those gathered at the third Budapest Demographic Summit on Thursday.
“We are looking for this point, we want to reach this, because this will be where the Hungarian family subsidy system will register a turn: we are not there yet, it will require another couple of years of determined work,” PM Orbán said.
The Budapest Demographic Summit III is the third of its kind, the first two summits took place in 2015 and 2017. It gathers current and former heads of state and government, politicians and experts from all over the world.
The purpose of the event is to discuss demographics, one of the greatest challenges of the current era, because the future depends on what type of people Europe will be populated by and whether Europe will remain Christian.
The Prime Minister said nations the size of Hungary, Czechia or Serbia must face the challenge that with a wrong demographic policy, they could even face extinction and in that case “something irreplaceable will have disappeared from the world”.
PM Orbán again stated that the Hungarian government’s official position is that negative demographic trends must be reversed by tapping into a nation’s internal resources, not by encouraging migration. He also spoke in support of the traditional family model where children have a father and a mother.
