Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Hungarian billionaire Sándor Csányi celebrated 150 years of the famous Pick salami at a Budapest gala.
During his speech, PM Orbán said that Hungarian businesses should strive to capture a larger part of the profits generated in the food industry. He said that while Hungarian-owned food firms account for 90 percent of all such companies and provide 70 percent of the employment in the sector, they only get less than half of the profits generated.
“(Hungarian companies) must be strong, live with the economic opportunities of the region, Europe and the world ultimately to the benefit of Hungary,” PM Orbán said.
The prime minister also praised Csányi for his business acumen: “… he is one of the few who know that one shouldn’t throw back the stones aimed at them, but stairs out of them instead,” he said. “But that takes nerves, self-control, cunning and patience”.
The Pick salami factory was established in Szeged, southern Hungary by Márk Pick who brought Italian specialists to the country.
