Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said what is at stake in the government's Voks 2025 referendum is "whether we can prevent Ukraine's European Union accession and if we can save Hungarians from the associated risk."
In a video broadcast on Facebook on Tuesday, PM Orbán said he had received the referendum sheet earlier in the day and encouraged voters to participate in the vote. "We are asking for voters' feedback on an issue that could determine Hungary's future in the next decades," the prime minister said.
PM Orbán warned that Ukraine's accession would involve "huge risks impacting businesses in Hungary, damaging the agriculture, jeopardising jobs and even pensions."
"Meanwhile, our adversaries, bureaucrats in Brussels and their commissionaires in Hungary, will do everything to press for Ukraine's EU accession, and what is at stake is if we can prevent that..." the prime minister said.
"Hungary's fate can only be determined by Hungarians," he said.
