Hungary's National Investigation Bureau’s (NNI) cyber crime unit has launched three criminal investigations following a hack of the Budapest public transport company’s (BKK) e-ticket system.
The NNI is conducting an investigation over the abuse of information system or data by an 18-year old man who took advantage of a fault in the e-ticket sales system to change the price of the monthly e-pass to 50 forints (0.16 euros). The investigation was launched following a complaint was filed to the police by T-Systems, the developer of the sales system.
The case was widely covered in the press and Government Spokesman Zoltán Kovács provided a background on it in his blog at About Hungary.
Besides the widely reported investigation, two further criminal procedures have been initiated against unknown offenders on a similar basis, MTI reports. One of these concerns suspicion of misappropriation related to losses BKK suffered due to development faults of the e-ticket system.
Police investigators are trying to establish who is responsible for failing to eliminate the security shortcomings of the system.
The third investigation has been launched to determine who an unknown hacker is who broke into the e-ticket system and stole the data.
Reports suggest that police are also working to identify the person who hacked the computer system of BKK’s MOL BuBi bike rental system who obtained the data of more
than 5,000 users and sent them also to 24.hu.
