A new survey has found that more than two-thirds of Budapest residents support the Liget project.
According to a poll conducted by the Inspira Research Group, once citizens living in Budapest had insight into the concrete plans of the project, the greater the support.
During the study, 1,000 respondents were asked to view the reconstruction plans of Budapest’s city park and then to evaluate the building plans and the project itself.
The results show that 70 percent of respondents said they backed the project, with support even higher among young people, those raising children and those living near City Park.
The House of Hungarian Innovation and the New National Gallery gained the support of 81 percent and 72 percent of respondents, respectively, and 72 percent said the new buildings would be an improvement to the park’s current condition.
The commissioner in charge of the project, László Baán said the survey had shown that “an overwhelming majority of Budapest residents agree with the project and support it when asked about its true content and goals.”
The Liget project is set to rehabilitate green areas which have been neglected for decades, alongside breaking up paved surfaces to raise green areas of the park. The reconstruction of buildings within the park and the construction of new ones is also part of the plan.
Budapest city leadership has indicated that it opposes granting construction licenses to certain projects within the overall investment that have not yet received the go-ahead.
