Phasing out area-based farm subsidies would be a huge blow to Hungary's agriculture sector as 160,000 farmers currently receive around 550 billion forints (EUR 1.37bn) from the European Union.

So far, 1.014 million people have returned the national questionnaire on protecting Hungary’s sovereignty.
“The new pact overwrites Hungary’s migration procedures, which could lead to the emergence of migrant ghettoes in the country,” said Csaba Dömötör.
Although forms are still being delivered and the deadline for returning questionnaires expires in a month, “it is by now clear that many people are expressing their opinions”, and 280,000 questionnaires have been returned so far, Csaba Dömötör said.
The agreement also further strengthens cooperation between the two countries in the areas of defense, and law enforcement, as well as in the fight against organized crime and terrorism.
Csaba Dömötör said the nationwide survey was necessary to ensure “decisions about the future remain in our own hands”.
The EU has called for contributions because earlier support for war-torn Ukraine had left its budget tens of billions of euros in the red.
A new plan would require member states that refuse to accommodate migrants to pay an equivalent of 8 million forints (EUR 22,000) per migrant.
Hungary has condemned Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine from the start and provides all the help it can to the refugees fleeing Ukraine.
