The foreign minister expressed thanks for Polish border guards and police protecting the borders of Poland and consequently the borders of the European Union.
“Migratory pressure threatening our continent has recently reached a new level as a growing group of illegal migrants try to enter Europe via Poland," the justice minister said.
Brussels had “stepped on the gas” and “blackmailed” Hungary and Poland because “we think differently about the world and Europe”.
Justice Minister Judit Varga said that “Brussels’ imperial ambitions must be stopped”.
The dispute is not over whether European Union law has precedence over national legislation but in which areas it has precedence.
“We fully support Poland and take solidarity with our Polish friends,” Minister Varga said.
PM Orbán said Hungary and Poland both regard keeping to the EU’s basic treaty and its provisions highly important.
Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said the two countries would “not bow to any intentions trying to drive a wedge” between them.
Hungary and Poland are once again the black sheep of the European Union because we insist on keeping to the original agreement on the EU budget and recovery fund, delivered by the European Council this past July.
Hungary and Poland have vetoed the European Union's next multi-year budget and post-pandemic recovery package.
The foreign minister said cooperation between Hungary and Poland remains strong and the two countries have regular consultations on the steps they take.
PM Orbán called Hungarian-Polish friendship “an engine of Central European cooperation and a key factor in European politics”.
