The prime minister said: "We couldn't continue simply looking on as people were robbed; those who raised prices had to be told: enough, no more!"
"The measure is working, with price differences tangible on the first day already," André Palóc said.
The measure could bring prices of the products down by more than 10 percent.
The prime minister said prices should have fallen as the increasing chances for a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine showed up in the economy.
Gergely Gulyás said the regulation would come into force on Monday. With the war in Ukraine approaching an end, unjustified price rises must be brought to an end, he added.
