A temperature of 38.7 degrees was recorded in Budapest yesterday, one of the highest seen since 1948
Heat alerts are issued when the medium temperature is 27 degrees Celsius or above for at least three consecutive days
On Friday and Saturday afternoon the highest temperatures are expected to hit 37 C. The ministry warned people to stay away from the sun and avoid intense physical activity
The alert comes after weeks of freezing temperatures which are now finally letting up, however the thawing weather is causing flooding across the nation
Weather alerts for the highest level of sleet have been issued by the national weather service for Budapest and areas in southern, western, and central Hungary
