Referring to the planned amendment of Slovakia's language law, Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said the deputy speaker of the Slovak National Council has confirmed that the governing coalition has no intention of restricting minority rights in any way.
Noting on Facebook that he held talks with Andrej Danko today, Minister Szijjártó called Danko "a good friend of Hungary". "And we do need such friends because there are many opponents to Slovak-Hungarian cooperation. The liberal mainstream finds their cooperation in EU platforms totally uncomfortable," he said.
Minister Szijjártó said Danko reassured him of the promise given previously by Slovakia's speaker and the country's foreign minister that the Slovak majority in the governing coalition had no intention of restricting the rights of minorities, including the right of southern Slovakia's Hungarian minority to the use of their mother tongue.
"We find this reassuring, and I asked my colleague Andrej Danko to keep tabs on the legislative process in this regard," he said.
