French national arrested for sending fake text messages to defraud Hungarians

An investigation has shown instances when the man sent 35,000 fraudulent text messages on the same day.

Somogy County police have confirmed that a French national has been arrested on suspicion of obtaining personal data and bank card details by sending fraudulent text messages to victims on behalf of the police. The 29-year-old man was arrested by a rapid response unit of Somogy County police in a Budapest cafe on Thursday. The suspect was taken to Kaposvár, in southwestern Hungary, for a hearing while the authorities seized several mobile phones, SIM cards and cash from the man. An investigation has shown instances when the man sent 35,000 fraudulent text messages on the same day.
