Hungary's population is shrinking, according to a report by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office.
According to statistics, between January and September of this year, there were 68,802 births in Hungary, which represents a 0.2 percent decrease from the same time period last year. This year has only seen 92,437 deaths, which is a 7.6 percent decrease from last year.
MTI reports that these numbers largely reinforce those found in population statistics released recently by the EU’s official statistical office, Eurostat, which also show a slowly shrinking Hungarian population.
In 2016, Hungary had a net natural decrease in population of 23,635, which demonstrated a continued downward trend. The rate of decrease has slowed significantly from 2015, when Hungary experienced a natural decrease of 31,160. The natural population decrease has slowed by 24.1 percent this year.
