Facebook statement by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán

24 September 2024, Dunaszekcső

The twelfth day of the campaign against the immediate threat. We’re in Dunaszekcső, just upstream from Mohács. Earlier we’d built a permanent defence system in Mohács, so there was no need for temporary defences there. Dunaszekcső is another matter, and here there are sections that had to be protected by temporary defences. Work started on Monday night and Tuesday morning, and was finished by Friday. In practice the settlement has been safe since Friday. Thanks to cooperation among police officers, disaster management services and water management authority staff, Dunaszekcső is completely safe and has remained dry – except for a few cellars. It’s the last day, and we’re escorting the flood wave out. It’s peaking here, flowing away before our eyes, soon to reach Mohács and then leave Hungary. We can all breathe a sigh of relief: in Hungary the great Danube flood of 2024 has been fought off.
