"Rosatom's cooperation with German, French, Swiss, Hungarian and American suppliers as well as partners from other countries is advancing smoothly," said Péter Szijjártó.
The foreign minister said the Paks upgrade would secure Hungary’s electricity supply for decades to come.
Alexey Likhachev visited the Paks site with Hungarian Foreign Ministry State Secretary Levente Magyar on Friday.
The meeting was also attended by Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Kirill Komarov, Rosatom’s first deputy director general.
Minister Szijjártó said both he and the Rosatom chief had expressed their commitment towards ensuring that the two new blocks should be put into operation at the beginning of the next decade.
The increased role of France’s Framatome in the project concerned only the delivery of the control technology required for the new reactor blocks.
Paks currently operates 4 VVER-440 reactors, while preparations are underway to build two new Rosatom-designed reactors, boosting capacity to 4,400 megawatts from 2,000 megawatts.
Talks will close today on the timeframe for the upgrade of Hungary’s sole nuclear plant at Paks with executives of Rosatom, the general contractor for the project.
The project of building two new blocks to the Paks nuclear power plant is being implemented as planned so that they be able to start operations in 2029-2030.
Parties at the talks were in agreement that the two new reactor blocks under construction in Paks guaranteed Hungary’s continued supply of cheap and climate-friendly electricity.
Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev has visited the Paks nuclear power plant to inspect progress on the site upgrade.
The plant will be the first of many to provide much needed energy to parts of the region and each is capable of providing electricity for 250-400 households
Rosatom's CEO Alexey Likhachev said that everything is still in the planning stages and the team are awaiting the nod from the EC, which he predicts will come soon
