Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry have called for the diversification of Central Europe’s energy supply.

The prime minister said the energy issues of the Central European region and the bilateral relations between Hungary and the United States were reviewed during a meeting held in the Parliament building yesterday.

The talks were also attended by David B. Cornstein, Ambassador of the United States of America, Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Antal Rogán, Head of the Cabinet of the Prime Minister.

All parties agreed that historical traditions and Christian roots must play an important role in modern governance. It was also agreed that the primary interest of Hungary and Central Europe is energy diversification, allowing the region to access energy from as many sources as possible.

PM Orbán welcomed America’s efforts and investments in the energy sector and the strengthening of ties between Hungary and the United States.

Rick Perry highlighted the emergence and importance of the development of the liquid natural gas (LNG) infrastructure, in view of the fact that is enables access to a rapidly developing market.

Minister Szijjártó said the Croatian LNG terminal on the island of Krk and the extraction of Romanian gas from under the Black Sea could both represent a solution to energy issues.

“Hungary is counting on the mediation of the United State with relation to both issues,” he added.
